BLENDER - advanced 3d modeling, animation, game engine...software.Its very powerful and easy to use(when you learn).It can can easily compete with commercial software.You can make high quality models, animations(check out short-film animtion made with blender Big Buck Bunny Full HD), and even games(check out advance game made with blender Yo Frankie!) and many more...Its available for Windows/Mac/Linux/FreeBSD.
GIMP - a powerfull image editor. Available for Windows/Mac/Linux.
CINELERRA - a high-end NLE, video editor, compositor.It has many advanced features.Its probably best free video editor and compositor.Its Available only for Linux.
KAZAM SCREENCASTER - is a screen recorder. It records screen on very high quality.I using it and quality is same as the screen, its amazing.Its only for Linux, so to get it type in terminal:
